Day trip to Hiroshima from Osaka
Hiroshima is an ideal day trip, only 1,5-2 hours by bullet train from Osaka. The city where the first atomic bomb was dropped during the 2nd World War is worth a visit not only for its historical significance but also for its touristic variety.
The Peace Memorial Park is the first on your things to do list. The monument is built in such a way that through the spot where the peace flame is constantly burning, the first bombed building is visible, which of course you may also visit. The crows flying over the monument give a hair-rising experience. Wander around the shopping streets near the memorial and enjoy okonomiyaki, the local delicious plate.
Hiroshima’s Castle is another monument that you can’t miss. Destroyed during the 2nd World War and reconstructed a few years later, is an absolutely beautiful castle with a marvelous view from its top.
Itsukushima Island. You can’t visit Hiroshima without admiring this small island located only 30-40 minutes from the city’s center. Take the JR metro line to Miyajimaguchi Station and then a 10-minute ferry boat (if you have JR pass, both the metro and ferry boat are covered by it). The island’s traditional character, the stunning shrines and temples along with the playful deers at its streets, create a unique experience during your trip to Japan. The most famous shrine of the island, protected by UNESCO, is Itsukushima Shinto Shrine with a striking red gate in the middle of the sea. Depending on the water level you may also go next to the gate and take incredible photos. The rest of the shrine is also very impressive to go around with its red torii and lanterns. Near the shrine a marvelous five storied pagoda Itsukushima Jinja Gojūnotō is also located and deserves your attention while up to the mountain’s side Daishoin, a peaceful and stunning Buddhist temple can be found. From the top of the temple, you can admire the green scenery and its view, while at its left side, a path of hundreds little Buddhist statues with different forms is created in a foggy atmosphere. So unique and tranquil landscape. If you have extra time to spare at the island, you can climb Mount Misen -there are hiking routes but also a cable car that can reach you to the observatory deck-and enjoy the green surroundings and the sea view from its top. If you feel like shopping for souvenirs or traditional local products take a walk to Miyajima Omotesandō Shopping Street and Machiya Street to end your unforgettable tour to the amazing island.
