Day trip to Chiang Rai, North Thailand

A day trip from Chiang Mai to the neighbor city Chiang Rai is essential during your stay at the city as in Chiang Rai is located , among others, one of the most popular and beautiful temples of North Thailand; Wat Rong Khun – The White Temple.

Wat Rong Khun - White Temple is on the top of your list when visiting Chiang Rai. This impressive and breathtaking white temple is the creation of a famous architect and even if it is called a temple, it does not function like one. The temple demonstrates the route from the hell to the path of Budha which symbolizes the paradise. This is the reason that you need to enter from the side of the down world and head to the center of the temple with the marvelous Buddha statue and not vice versa. Even the toilets of the temple are impressive (covered in gold).

Another marvelous temple is the Wat Rong Suea Ten- The blue Temple. The Buddhist temple covered in blue, feels like you are at a fairy tale or animation movie where the blue jinni of the magic bottle will appear and make your wishes come true. Outside the temple there is one of the yummiest coconut ice-creams that you also need to try.

The Golden Triangle: It is called the region where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. In the past drug selling businesses were performed in this part while today has been converted into a famous touristic attraction. You can take a boat ride along the Mekong River while enjoying the view of the luxurious casino buildings of Laos on the opposite side and watching the borders of Myanmar on the other side.

One quite touristic but popular stop when being close at the Golden Triangle is the Longneck Karen Village where a special Myanmar tribe lives. What makes it unique is the permanent necklace around the women’s neck which gets bigger as the years pass. Every year since a very young age another line of jewelry is added around the women’s necks making them long. The necklace can never be removed, and it is part of their distinctive and controversial culture. You can take photos with the friendly ladies, try a similar necklace or buy some handmade artisan products from their market.
